Highlighting Our Favourite Pro-Plastic Commercials

\"RetroIf we know one thing, here at Canadian POS Corporation, it’s that when Canadian merchants accept credit cards and debit cards, they make their lives a whole lot easier. You see, the majority of Canadians prefer to pay with plastic. It has given our nation that sometimes-used moniker of being a “cashless society”. In 2015, it is becoming more and more rare to find shoppers who pay strictly with cash.

Credit card companies are well aware of this. They know that the acceptance of credit cards makes lives a lot easier on customers too. It is not surprising that they use the concept of convenience as a way to advertise their cards. After all, it’s hard to argue that paying with credit cards makes for quicker and easier checkout times. No sifting through wallets for cash or fumbling around for exact change is necessary.

Such a scenario is depicted in one of our favourite credit card commercials from a few years ago. In this particular ad, a man is shown walking through a myriad of shopping experiences, all of which are creatively embellished for dramatic effect. From one shopping experience to the next, the swiping of Visa credit cards can be seen as quick and easy methods of paying for the variety of purchases that are being made.

Finally, the man is ready to make his own purchase and he pulls out his wallet to retrieve some cash. Everything comes to a standstill. It’s as if he has committed some kind of strange offense that is unacceptable in this apparent cashless society. The cashier reluctantly takes his cash and offers him change to complete his transaction. It comes off as an embarrassing situation. But it’s certainly a humorous one for the viewing audience of the ad!

“The Visa Check Card,” states the narrator, “Because money shouldn’t slow you down. Life takes faster money. Life takes Visa.” Clearly, the overall message here is that making purchases can be done with ease and quickness when you use your credit card. However, the commercial makes an even bolder statement. It’s just weird to pay for purchases with cash nowadays. The same point is made in another one of our favourite ads.

In an Interac commercial from a couple of years back, a small yellow Interac truck can be seen racing through the forest against a couple of athletic types on bicycles. “Interac Flash – it’s fast,” proclaims the narrator, “And with chip technology and zero liability, it’s secure.” By the end of the race, two people can be seen making purchases at a convenience store. One customer counts through some change, while the other – one of the bikers – quickly taps her Interac card on the POS terminal to complete her purchase.

“Interac Flash – it sure beats cash,” the narrator affirms. Once again, the point is made that using cash to make payments is something that can be regarded as a thing of the past. It should be mentioned, by the way, that these two commercials aren’t the latest to be released from either brand. They just happened to catch our attention because they highlight the fact that the concept of a “cashless society” in our continent has been around for quite some time now.
